Extended services

Meeting the needs of children and families

Organised directly by the school, or in partnership with private or voluntary sector providers, extended services meet the needs of children, families and the local community.

What are extended services?

Extended services help to deliver the aims of Every Child Matters: a Government initiative calling for all organisations involved in providing services to children and young people to work together towards five key outcomes.

Delivering extended services

These pages outline how schools can identify local demand for additional services and work in partnership with other schools and local organisations to deliver them.

School improvement planning framework

The school improvement framework offers a tried and tested approach to enhance school improvement planning activities that emphasise the needs of the whole child.

Mapping extended services

To raise awareness of the extended services that pupils and parents can access through schools, the TDA has launched a new Extended Services Google Map Mashup, designed to help schools and clusters of schools share details of the extended services on offer and to ensure that school staff and local parents alike have a full understanding of available activities and services. Nine pilot schools have uploaded a full description of the extended services they offer onto the map – we want schools clusters to follow their lead and build a picture of extended services practice around the country. Follow the link to review the map or to add details of your extended services.
