Individuals – why join the programme
The Transition to Teaching Programme is for people who want to change their career to teach maths, science or information and communication technology (ICT) in state secondary schools in England.
You need to have a degree in science, technology, engineering, maths or a related subject to be eligible for the programme, and you need to be recommended by your employer.
If you want to teach outside England, find out about training to teach in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

We recognise that changing career is a big decision, so we have put in place a comprehensive advice and guidance service to help you throughout the process. This includes advice on your suitability for teaching and training options, arranging subject knowledge refresher courses or classroom experience, advice on progression in teaching, information on funding to train and salary levels as a teacher.
Making the right decision
People change their careers to go into teaching for many reasons. All have a strong desire to pass their knowledge on to a new generation and ‘give something back’ through teaching. It is our responsibility to ensure that you make the right decision – even if this means concluding that teaching is not the right career for you.
Extra help from your current employer
Many organisations have already signed up to support the programme by promoting it to their staff and allowing reasonable time off for selected, eligible employees to investigate the opportunity. Several organisations offer additional support.
