'My degree is in Spanish and German and I’ve picked up Portuguese, Italian and even some Arabic along the way. But French fell through the cracks. I suppose I felt I already spoke enough languages!
After graduating, I spent seven years working and travelling all over the world. When I started thinking about becoming a teacher, I was attracted by the long holidays – but I also felt my love of languages and the outdoors meant I could offer a lot to the pupils.
I knew not speaking French would limit my options, so I enrolled on the extension course at Liverpool John Moores University. Because I’d got no prior experience, I did an extra hour at the end of each lesson. The tutors were excellent and I picked up a lot of pointers on effective teaching as well as learning my subject.
I spent my study visit in Paris. The course was pretty intensive but there was a lot of free time too, and it was great to use the language in a more relaxed environment. By the time I got back, I really felt I could hold my own.
The extension course definitely helped give me the confidence to teach. It was 100 per cent relevant to my work and I don’t think I would have got a job if I hadn’t done it.'
