Subject knowledge booster courses

Subject knowledge booster courses help you gain the depth of knowledge you'll need to train to teach your chosen subject.

Intended for individuals who have already applied for, or started, postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT), these booster courses aim to identify your individual training needs and 'top-up' your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of design and technology.

What subjects can you take a booster course in?

There are currently courses available for the following phases and subjects:

Primary:

  • English
  • mathematics, and
  • science.

Secondary:

  • design and technology
  • geography
  • information and communications technology (ICT)
  • mathematics
  • modern languages
  • music
  • physical education
  • religious education, and
  • science.

How long do booster courses take?

Subject knowledge booster courses usually comprise of the equivalent of two weeks' study. Depending on the individual course, you can take this all in one go as a full-time course, or spread over a longer period part-time, possibly through evening drop-in sessions or weekend courses.

When can you complete a booster course?

Subject knowledge booster courses can be taken before and/or during initial teacher training (ITT).

Where are booster courses available?

Subject knowledge booster courses are available all over England. You can search for a subject knowledge booster course using our interactive database.

Booster courses are not available in Wales. Here you can complete a Prepare to Teach course, which will give you the opportunity to sample teaching while boosting your subject knowledge. Prepare to Teach courses are available in these secondary subjects:

  • design and technology
  • maths
  • modern languages
  • science, and
  • Welsh.

“A booster course is a great way to refresh your subject knowledge. We spent three days on each of the science subjects, starting simply and gradually working up to more complex concepts, which accommodated everybody’s learning needs.”
