Government uses WAGs to inspire pupils

The Government is highlighting the academic achievements of well-known wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of footballers to inspire school pupils.

WAGs such as Colleen McLoughlin, the fiancée of England striker Wayne Rooney who achieved ten GCSEs with four at grade A, are being held up as an example of the importance of staying on at school.

The Government is using the role models who, despite their notoriety for enjoying extravagant shopping trips funded by their spouses wages, have strong academic records in the hope that this information will inspire pupils to achieve a minimum of five A to C grade GCSE passes.

A spokesperson for the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) said: "Of England’s highest profile WAGs, at least nine in 12 are known to have at least the minimum level of qualifications needed to get on in life.

"So rather than idealising WAGs for their glamorous lifestyles, the LSC is today encouraging young people to follow their lead by gaining the minimum set of qualifications before leaving learning, whatever they aspire to be."

Top scorers included Lisa Roughead, Michael Carrick's other half, who has a degree in business and Michaela Henderson-Thynne, Stewart Downing's on-off girlfriend, who is currently studying for a law degree.ADNFCR-1162-ID-18333635-ADNFCR
