Teachers and students have been celebrating after figures show an improvement in GCSE results.

A total of 46.5 per cent of students achieved five or more good GCSEs including English and maths, a 0.7 percentage point increase on last year's results.

"Whatever the carping from the usual doom-mongers, 470,000 more young people since 1997 have got a better start in life," said schools minister Jim Knight.

Since 1995-1996, the number of students achieving five or more good GCSEs including English and maths has increased by 11.3 per cent.

However, a gender gap remains and girls continue to do better than boys, with 66 per cent of girls achieving five or more good GCSEs compared to 57.1 per cent of boys.

Regionally, the biggest improvement in results was shown in Halton, Wakefield and Nottingham. ADNFCR-1162-ID-18333651-ADNFCR
