Magic lessons inspire Nottingham pupils

Lessons inspired by the wizardry of the Harry Potter novels are helping pupils in Nottingham learn.

Pupils at Robert Mellors Primary School in Nottingham are being allowed to dress as their favourite Harry Potter characters, chant spells and use their wands in maths classes, reports The Guardian.

Headteacher Donna Chambers, who has dressed up in Harry Potter costume herself as part of the initiative, spoke to the paper about how the concept works.

She said: "We are just a little school who let the children decide how they want to learn. Other schools do topic-based learning, but not to the extent we do.

"With maths, the teacher will say 'today we are learning how to do inverse operation'. They put on their Harry Potter hat and wands, and work it out in their books."

Ofsted inspectors that visited the school last year described its performance as "improving rapidly" and praised the care and support that pupils receive at the school.

Ms Chambers' leadership was also celebrated in the report, with inspectors noting that since her arrival in September 2004 she has "led the school very well through a period of sustained development that has underpinned the rise in standards."ADNFCR-1162-ID-18360219-ADNFCR
