A school in South Shields has been given approval to build a new £7 million learning centre.

Harton Technology College has received the backing of the local council to open the post-16 learning centre, which is intended to provide services for 266 pupils, the Shields Gazette reports.

According to the newspaper, the centre will be located on Lisle Road and will offer the government’s new diploma qualifications.

Welcoming the plans, Ken Gibson, headteacher at the college, said that he was “absolutely delighted” that the local authority has lent its support to the proposals.

“Our intention is to increase the level of choice and diversity available to the young people of South Tyneside and I am proud to be the headteacher of the school at yet another important and massive phase in its development," he remarked.

The headteacher went on to say that these are “exciting times” for both the school and the local borough.
The college currently has 1,350 students.
