The General Teaching Council for England (GTC) has welcomed the prospect of provisional registration for trainee teachers.

Under the new proposals, as of September 2008 trainee teachers will have to provisionally register their status, as will those with overseas qualifications working in the UK in maintained schools from the same month next year.

Keith Bartley, chief executive of the GTC, said: "We believe that provisional registration is an important means of ensuring that trainee teachers, overseas trained teachers and instructors working in schools, all of whom have frequent contact with children, are both suitable to teach and are properly regulated."

He added that the new system will also acknowledge the "worthwhile contribution" those working towards their qualified teacher status make to the profession.

The GTC is an independent professional body for teaching in England that was launched in September 2000 and is comprised of teachers, governors and parents with an interest in education.ADNFCR-1162-ID-18588092-ADNFCR
