Easier access to career profiles for new teachers

The career entry and development profile (CEDP) used by every trainee teacher as they approach the end of their training is now available on-line.

Trainees and newly qualified teachers (NQTs) are able to download key material, so that they can build their records electronically, save drafts, cut and paste from other documents and e-mail their profile to tutors and prospective employers.

The profile, published by the teacher training agency (TTA), aims to help new teachers think about their professional development at key points towards the end of their training and during their induction period.

It helps them relate their training to life in the classroom, focus on achievements and goals in their first years as a teacher, and guide discussions about their professional development needs.

Angela Walsh, Co-Director of Teacher Training Strategy for the TTA, said:

“The career entry and development profile is a working document to help new teachers and their tutors identify their strengths and priorities for professional development.

“Making the materials available on-line offers individuals more flexibility to assemble the information they need, and reflects the increasing use of IT by teachers at all stages of their careers.”

Notes for editors

The career entry and development profile (CEDP) has been released primarily as a package of online materials from 2004. There are downloadable formats for recording and reflecting discussions, setting objectives, action planning, maintaining a professional portfolio and other facets. Case studies are featured in video clips on a dedicated section of the TTA website.  A structured folder will also be available towards the end of March for trainees and NQTs to build up a hard copy of their profile, if they wish.

The CEDP website pages are at: get into teaching

The TTA was established under the Education Act 1994. Its purpose is to raise standards in schools by attracting able and committed people into teaching and by improving the quality of teacher training and continuing professional development.

Prospective applicants to initial teacher training should contact the teaching Information Line: 0845 600 099.
