Windrush awards search for inspiring teachers

Make a nomination now! The search is on for inspiring teachers from minority ethnic backgrounds as the nominations deadline for the 2004 Windrush Education Awards draws near. Nominations must be submitted by Monday 17 May.

The Awards, sponsored by the teacher training agency (TTA), recognise teachers who have excelled by raising achievement and inspiring others to consider a career in teaching.

Nominations are invited for a range of teachers including classroom teachers, teacher trainers, lecturers and school mentors. Nominees can be put forward by colleagues, pupils and parents or be self- nominated.

A panel of judges will shortlist nominees to go forward to an awards ceremony at the Savoy Hotel, London on the 21 June, where the winners will be announced.

Ralph Tabberer, Chief Executive of the Teacher Training Agency, said:

“Excellent teachers come from a wide range of backgrounds, bringing with them diverse skills and experiences. We need to make sure that we tap into the talent among different communities and encourage more graduates to consider a career in teaching.

“The TTA is delighted to support the Windrush Education Awards which give the opportunity to celebrate the contribution excellent teachers are making by raising the achievement of every individual.”

Notes for editors

The teacher training agency (TTA) has sponsored the Windrush Awards since 2000.

The teacher training agency (TTA) was established under the Education Act 1994. Its purpose is to raise standards in schools by attracting able and committed people into teaching and by improving the quality of teacher training and induction.

The Secretary of State announced on 29 March 2004 that he is extending the TTA’s remit to include training for school support staff, and continuing professional development for teachers.
