Teachers: your standards, your career, your say!
England's 430,000 teachers are invited to have their say on the revision of standards for classroom teachers, by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) today.
The review is intended to bring coherence to the four sets of existing standards (QTS, Induction, Senior Teacher (threshold) and AST) and to develop standards for the Excellent Teacher Scheme.
The aim of the review is to achieve a coherent and progressive framework of professional standards which will be a reference point for teachers as they plan and review their professional development. The revised framework will establish clear career pathways, from initial teacher training through to Excellent Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher, and give teachers a clear understanding of the requirements they need to progress to the next stage in their career.
Teachers' managers and mentors will be able to work with each teacher to identify the most appropriate professional development for them, leading to better coaching, mentoring and training.
Mary Doherty, director of Teachers' Programme at the TDA said:
"We know from our research that a large proportion of teachers want to continue their career through work in the classroom, so clear standards for Senior Teacher (threshold), Advanced Skills Teacher and the introduction of Excellent Teacher will recognise and promote the very best in classroom teaching.
"We believe the revised standards will also prompt better quality, more focused professional development which can only be good news for individual teachers, pupils and for school performance."
"Serving teachers have a wealth of experience and wisdom to contribute to this review of professional standards. Our message to teachers is this – these are your standards and this is your career, so have your say in this important consultation, and help us to provide you with clear pathways to help you get the most out of your career."
The TDA is encouraging every teacher to contribute to the review through a widespread online consultation beginning on 30 September. Teachers can have their say at www.tda.gov.uk/yoursay, via an online questionnaire designed specifically by ex serving teachers to take up just 15 minutes of teacher time. The first stage of the consultation will be analysed mid November so the TDA is urging teachers to respond as soon as possible.
Following the consultation the TDA will advise the secretary of state about how the standards should be revised.
Notes for editors
A series of developmental seminars are being held across the country between September and November 2005 for a range of stakeholders – including teacher trainers, trade unions, subject and professional associations. A writing group will then meet in November and develop draft revised standards which will be refined with further consultation through seminars which will take place in January and February 2006.
The Training and Development Agency for Schools was established under the Education Act 2005 and was formerly known as the Teacher Training Agency. Its purpose is to raise children's standards of achievement and promote their well-being by improving the training and development of the whole school workforce.
