Have your say on a new qualification strategy for support staff

School support staff and their managers know that the process of identifying suitable training can be complicated and confusing. More than 400 different qualifications are relevant to support staff, but identifying the most appropriate for an individual can be a daunting task.
That’s why the TDA has worked with schools, support staff, awarding bodies and other stakeholders to develop a qualifications strategy for school support staff – and we would like to know what you think of it.

Essentially, the draft strategy outlines a more transparent, flexible and simple approach to support staff qualifications. It will help support staff plan their development, building on what they already know.

The strategy will clarify how each qualification can improve the effectiveness of individual support staff, the whole school team and, ultimately, the pupils’ experience of school. And it complements the new Children’s Plan, which sets out a vision of a more highly skilled children’s workforce.

Within the strategy is a proposal for a new competency framework for qualifications at levels 2 and 3. The framework will allow individuals to develop their knowledge and skills over time by choosing units directly related to their work. Units can then be combined into meaningful and valued qualifications.

We encourage anyone involved in support staff training and development to view the draft strategy and take part in the final online consultation which runs from 31 March until 30 June. For more information, please visit the TDA website.
