Each year, around 7500 students are placed in schools in England for up to 15 days, gaining classroom experience that helps them make a decision about a career in teaching. Over 27,000 students have participated in the scheme and it is estimated that over 45 per cent progress to initial teacher training.
Funding is available to run the scheme for at least three more years. Most local providers are university-based and the emphasis is on placing students studying STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and maths. Institutions not currently involved with the SAS can now apply to join and help run the scheme.
Potential new scheme providers, who would be expected to collaborate closely with initial teacher training providers, can find out more about the present scheme on theĀ TDA website or by e-mailing sascheme@tda.gov.uk.
