New in-year collection of initial teacher training data

As a result of the implementation of provisional registration for the coming academic year (08/09) the TDA has been working with colleagues from the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) and the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) to define a process that minimises the burden placed on institutions. We have done this by combining the capture of data for provisional registration with the existing in-year collection of information about initial teacher training (ITT) enrolments in higher education institutions.

The new process will mean that institutions are no longer required to complete a separate TTR1 submission for the GTCE, or the TDA census. From September 2008, institutions will submit data on ITT trainees via the HESA ‘Aardvark’ data collection system. This data will then be fed to the TDA and the GTCE.

Data will be collected at an individual level for the purposes of provisional registration. The collection process will also involve checking institution-level TDA reports on the TDA website. Further details of the data collection process will be published in the coming months and will be presented at TDA training sessions in September 2008. These training sessions will take place in Birmingham and London and details will shortly be distributed to each institution’s data contact and responsible officer.

The TDA, GTCE and HESA are working together to minimise the impact of these new legislative requirements and, as far as possible, simplify and standardise the reporting requirements of different statutory bodies. This is consistent with the principles set out in the Higher Education Regulation Review Group Concordat.

If you have any queries about the new collection, please e-mail Graham McLatchie or call 0207 023 8391.
