The second edition of ‘Key Data on Teaching Languages at School in Europe’ has been published by the Eurydice network.
The publication provides a detailed picture of language teaching in primary and secondary education in 31 European countries and covers:
- modern foreign languages in the curriculum
- teaching time
- assessment
- classical languages and regional and minority languages
- the range of different languages taught
- participation rates
- teachers
- support for immigrant students
The report identifies a greater level of compulsory foreign language teaching in most countries, and an increasing trend to encourage pupils to learn a foreign language at primary level. It also shows that English predominates almost everywhere, and the percentage of pupils who learn English is rising. The data relates to the 2006–2007 school year. The report is available to download from the Eurydice website.
