Continuing professional development strategy

In autumn 2006, the TDA submitted advice to ministers on teachers’ professional development.

The advice was presented in three inter-related documents:

A ministerial response was received in March 2007 that endorsed the TDA’s advice. As part of that advice, Jim Knight asked us to provide a progress report at the end of 2007. The importance of ensuring that schools view performance management, the professional standards for teachers and CPD as a coherent package was stressed.

In taking its CPD remit forward, TDA will continue to work closely with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and other key partners to ensure the ambitions set out in the advice are met.

This advice builds on the previous communication to the Secretary of State in January 2005, which details the expansion of the TTA (now TDA) remit to include support for the continuing professional development of teachers.

A professional development strategy for the children’s workforce in schools 2009-12 will be published by the TDA in the summer. The strategy replaces and builds on the existing strategies Continuing Professional Development: A Strategy for Teachers (2007-10) and A Skills Strategy for the Wider School Workforce 2006-09. It has been developed and supported by the TDA’s National Advisory Group (NAG).
