The graduate teacher programme (GTP) suits mature people who want to continue earning while they train. The training is tailored to the trainee’s individual needs. Entry to the GTP is highly competitive and places are allocated to the best schools and graduates in priority categories.
Key features of the graduate teacher programme:
- Trainees need a UK bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in mathematics and English. For primary and key stage 2/3 teaching, candidates also need GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in science.
- Trainees must be employed as an unqualified teacher.
- The school pays a salary at the rate for an unqualified teacher. The TDA pays a grant of up to £14,000 towards the employment cost and up to £4,920 to cover training costs. Some places are available with training grant only where the school can meet the full employment cost and where trainees have experience.
- The programme normally takes one year. Trainees with teaching experience may be able to complete the programme in less time.
The GTP is delivered by employment based initial teacher training providers (EBITTs) in England. EBITTs are usually partnerships of initial teacher training (ITT) providers, schools and local education authorities.
You should apply directly to your local EBITT provider for a GTP place. Find your nearest EBITT provider
