Health and safety
As an employer, you are responsible for health and safety in your school. That means ensuring staff understand the risks and get the training they need to deal with them.
Employees must have the literacy and numeracy skills they need to:
- use work items, such as personal protective equipment, in accordance with training or instructions. For example, caretakers will need to maintain a folder of safety data sheets on the chemicals used in the school
- carry out activities in accordance with training and read and understand instruction sheets
- understand notices, memos, quality procedures and health and safety regulations, and
- inform the school of any serious risks.
Developing the skills of the whole workforce will help ensure that your school is complying with regulations and secure a safe working environment.
