Skills for life in recruitment

At Islington’s Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, all teaching assistants are given a short test in level 1 literacy and numeracy as part of the recruitment process.

The test is not meant to act as a deterrent, and the results do not affect the outcome of the candidate's interview. However, it does provide the school with a valuable insight into candidates' learning needs.

Janette Goss is the school's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO). She is also responsible for the training and development of support staff. She explains, "Some individuals may have missed opportunities to gain qualifications, while others may possess a level 2 but need to brush up on their skills. We need to know what their needs are in order to offer appropriate development or refresher programmes where necessary."
