Independent learning

Gemma, a catering assistant, developed her literacy and numeracy skills through independent learning.

Gemma, whose role involves regular contact with children, originally enrolled on a council-funded literacy course. However, a number of people dropped out and the course was cancelled. The tutor offered the remaining learners the opportunity to continue brushing up on their English skills with an external provider.

Gemma decided to go on to complete her level 1 in English with learndirect, and to start her level 1 in maths. She worked as an independent learner, using computers for approximately two hours per week at a local learndirect centre. Gemma found self-study very convenient as it allowed her to work at her own pace. A personal tutor provided guidance and support.

Having achieved national certificates at level 1 in literacy and numeracy, Gemma went on to level 2 in both qualifications. Although she found these challenging, and a big step up from the level 1 tests, she succeeded at both. She is looking to move onto other courses, including ICT. “My self confidence has increased and I feel very proud of what I have achieved,” she says. Gemma has been nominated for a national learner’s award.
