National vocational qualifications (NVQs)

National vocational qualifications (NVQs) are work-related, competence based qualifications assessed in the workplace. They are based on national occupational standards (NOS).

Most NVQs consist of mandatory and optional units. Mandatory units cover functions relevant to all roles supported by the underpinning NOS. The choice of optional units allows staff to select those most relevant to their work and any specialism.

Because NVQs are assessed in the workplace you will need to work with your staff to ensure they can provide appropriate evidence for their chosen units. You must also allow time for assessor and verifier visits, and for your staff to create their portfolio of evidence. By early 2008 the TDA will provide guidance for schools whose staff undertake the new NVQ in supporting teaching and learning in schools. The principles will be the same as for any NVQ.

NVQs are developed by the sector skills council or sector body responsible for the underpinning NOS. There are NVQs available for most occupational areas. The career development framework or the national database of qualifications will help you find an NVQ related to the roles in your school.

NVQs are delivered by awarding bodies that design the qualification and offer it through approved training providers. To find a training provider either visit the relevant awarding body’s website or Learndirect. More information on NVQs can be found in the career development guidance.

The TDA is responsible for the structure of the NVQs for teaching assistants and the NVQs in supporting teaching and learning in schools that replace them.
