NVQ in supporting teaching and learning in schools

The national vocational qualification (NVQ) in supporting teaching and learning in schools replaced the NVQ for teaching assistants in March 2008.

The national vocational qualifications (NVQs) in supporting teaching and learning in schools are available at two levels on the national qualifications framework – levels 2 and 3. These are not the same as job grades which are determined by local authorities and schools.

The NVQs are based on the national occupational standards for supporting teaching and learning in schools (NOS STL). Each level consists of a group of core/mandatory units which everyone must meet and a range of optional units from which you have to meet . You can download the qualification structure from the downloads section of this page.

You can view the full range of NOS STL units in our section on the national occupational standards. Our guidance on the NOS STL also includes a unit selection tool to help you choose appropriate units for your role. You are advised to check which of the optional units your awarding body or training provider delivers as not all providers will offer the full range.

Level 2

Level 2 qualifications are for staff who carry out a range of activities, some of which may be non-routine. They work under the direction of a teacher and coordinate with others. They demonstrate a range of skills and apply knowledge and understanding in a number of areas.

Level 3

Level 3 qualifications are for those who work in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations using a range of technical skills. They carry out self-directed activities under guidance and may have limited responsibility for directing the work of others. They apply knowledge and skills in a range of complex areas.
