It is important that all staff have the skills they need to do their job and feel confident about their own literacy and numeracy. Qualifications can also be a requirement for career progression, for example to higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status.
Level 2 qualifications in mathematics and English are available through local training providers and local authorities can help school leaders identify suitable courses for members of their support team. The TDA has developed a skills for life planner to help school leaders address skills needs within their schools.
Support staff may be interested in the 'Move On!' website run by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA), which offers learners a free skills check, a free brush-up course for the literacy and numeracy skills needed to pass the national level 2 tests, and a list of local centres
