Develop or recruit a school business manager

There are two ways of getting an appropriately skilled school business manager: training someone already employed in the school, or recruiting externally.

Developing an existing member of the school staff

Most schools find their school business manager through developing the skills of an existing member of staff through the Certificate or Diploma of School Business Management.

From the experience and evidence of the trainees who have completed the training, it is highly likely that there is already somebody working in your school who has the desire and potential to play a more significant leadership role.

Recruiting externally

Recruiting somebody externally is not uncommon. These may be school business managers that have already obtained a Certificate or Diploma of School Business Management, or they could be from other professions.

Recruiting personnel from outside school settings can be useful in bringing a business dimension into the relevant aspects of the decision-making process. However, it may be necessary to provide additional training to enable the school business manager to be effective in your particular school environment.
