Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the key to school improvement and raising standards of pupil achievement.

To do their jobs effectively, teachers need opportunities to update their knowledge and skills and reflect on their own practice. Our aim is to ensure that school leaders have the information, advice and support they need to give teachers these opportunities. We will do this by sharing information about high-quality training and development opportunities, and working with schools to help identify knowledge gaps and overcome barriers to learning.

We believe that school leaders also have a vital role to play, by building effective systems for identifying learning needs and managing CPD provision, as well as actively promoting development opportunities for all school staff. We have already started a dialogue with headteachers and school leaders around the country, with the aim of finding out how best we can help them manage CPD in their schools.

For more information about our work in this area, contact your local regional adviser. You can also explore the teachernet professional and career development tool. As well as providing practical help for all staff to plan and manage their development, it features case study materials showing how other schools are managing and benefiting from CPD.
