Mathematics pilot CPD programme

Do you currently have teachers without a specialism in mathematics, teaching the subject to learners aged between 11 to 19?

The TDA is currently requesting tenders from organisations/consortia to run courses on a national basis from July 2009. Teachers will be able to register for places on these courses from 2009. This website will be updated early in 2009 with details of how to get in touch with the course providers.

The University of Brighton, Liverpool Hope University and University of Wolverhampton are currently piloting continuing professional development courses in mathematics. The second year of the pilot started in summer 2008, and teaching is now underway.

The pilot courses are aimed at teachers of mathematics, who are not specialists in the subject, teaching learners aged 11-19 in schools and colleges. According to a 2006 study by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NfER) into the deployment of teachers and support staff to deliver the curriculum, up to 24 per cent of teachers deployed to teach mathematics may fall into this category.

The course develops participants’ knowledge of mathematics and subject specific pedagogical skills, enabling them to enhance their confidence and effectiveness in the teaching of mathematics. In order to be eligible for the course teachers must have QTS and be teaching mathematics for a significant portion of their timetable. Each participant on the course follows a development path that builds on prior knowledge of teaching mathematics and is tailored to individual needs. The course provides participants with the opportunity to gain academic credits and offers up to 40 days of support.

If a teacher at your school has completed the pilot, has obtained accreditation and is now looking for guidance on claiming their £5,000 award they should contact their course provider. Further information is available at www.tda.gov.uk/mathscpdcourse
