1
Before the newly qualified teacher (NQT) is appointed
- Check that the school is in a position to provide appropriate monitoring, support and assessment (note the governing body should also be satisfied that the school can provide an appropriate induction programme).
2
Before the NQT takes up post
- Designate an induction tutor for each NQT, and make sure they have the information, skills and support they need to carry out their role.
- Tell the local authority (LA) about NQTs taking up posts in your school.
- Make sure the NQT is assigned a timetable with no more than 90 per cent of the average contact time assigned to more experienced teachers in the school, and that the NQT’s duties do not place unreasonable demands on them.
- Make sure the induction programme is in place, and that targeted support activities can start straightaway.
3
By the end of the first term
- Meet the NQT (the induction tutor can also attend) for the first formal assessment meeting. The meeting should focus on how well the NQT is meeting the qualified teacher status (QTS) standards, and their progress towards meeting the induction standards.
- Either you or the induction tutor should fill in the relevant report form and send a copy to the LA and the NQT within 10 working days of the meeting.
4
At the start of the second term
- Organise retention/transmission of the records of any NQT who is joining the school after doing part of their induction in another school, or who is leaving the school before completing the induction period.
5
By the end of the second term
- Meet the NQT (the induction tutor can also attend) for the second formal assessment meeting. This should focus on the NQT’s progress towards meeting the induction standards; complete and circulate the formal assessment report as before.
6
By the end of the third term
- Meet the NQT (the induction tutor can also attend) for the third and final formal assessment meeting based on further observations of the NQT’s teaching. This should focus on the extent to which the NQT has met the induction standards.
- Within 10 working days of the end of the induction period, tell the LA whether the NQT has satisfactorily completed the induction period.
