As a headteacher, you have two key responsibilities:
- to make sure all newly qualified teachers (NQTs) get an appropriate induction programme, and
- to make a recommendation to the local authority (LA), based on rigorous and fair assessment procedures, as to whether the NQT has met the induction standards.
There are also a number of specific tasks and requirements. You must make sure that:
- the NQT’s timetable represents no more than 90 per cent of the average contact time normally allocated to more experienced teachers in the school
- time released is protected, distributed throughout the induction period, and used to support the NQT’s professional development right from the start of the induction period
- the NQT is assigned an induction tutor who is adequately prepared and who can work effectively in the role (in some cases, you may wish to act as induction tutor yourself)
- any duties assigned to the NQT are reasonable
- the NQT has the opportunity to raise concerns about the induction programme, and that those concerns are addressed satisfactorily
- the LA is informed as soon as possible if the NQT is at risk of failing to meet the induction standards, and that you observe their teaching
- the governing body is kept informed about arrangements for the induction of NQTs in the school, and the results of formal assessment meetings.
You also need to make sure the following tasks are carried out, although you can delegate them:
- work with the NQT to devise a targeted and appropriate monitoring, support and assessment programme, building on their use of the career and development profile (CEDP) and drawing on external resources where relevant
- arrange additional work experience (if appropriate) in settings outside the school (for example, in a nursery or post-16 setting)
- provide specialist support if needed
- tell the LA when any teacher who is subject to the induction arrangements either joins or leaves the school
- send formal assessment reports to the LA
- liaise with other headteachers and LAs as appropriate in relation to NQTs working part-time in more than one school
- make sure any relevant reports and records are obtained from any school(s) in which an NQT has served part of their induction, and forward copies of any previously completed assessment reports to the LA
- make sure copies of all documents such as objectives, action plans and reports of review meetings are kept until the induction period has been completed satisfactorily and any appeal determined
- keep copies of any records or assessment reports for those NQTs who leave the school before completing the induction period, and forward them to the NQT’s new school as quickly as possible when requested
- submit the relevant assessment form (available from your LA or teachernet) to the appropriate body within 10 working days of the end of the induction period.
