In 1988/89, returning teachers made up 54 per cent (19,000) of those entering the profession. Until recently, these numbers had been steadily declining. But Department for Education and Skills (DfES) figures show an upturn from 9,700 returners in 1999/2000 to 12,200 in 2002/03, and returners now make up 29 per cent of the total inflow of people into teaching. Returners bring a unique combination of teaching experience and knowledge and skills gained from outside, equipping them to make a positive contribution to teaching and learning.
The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) is keen to encourage more qualified teachers to return to teaching. Since 1998, we have been funding an increasing number of returners course, designed to help former teachers refresh and update their knowledge and skills. Between 2003 and 2005, the TDA funded over 260 courses, providing training and support for more than 4,000 returners.
