The graduate teacher programme

The graduate teacher programme (GTP) offers graduates the opportunity to train while they work. The programme could benefit your school in a number of ways.

If you have hard-to-fill vacancies, the GTP could help you recruit and train people specifically for those posts – although trainees should be treated as supernumerary during their training. It’s also an excellent way of developing experienced support staff who would like to become qualified teachers, and of giving existing teachers opportunities to develop by mentoring and coaching trainees.

All maintained schools, non-maintained city technology colleges, city colleges for the technology of the arts and city academies are eligible for the GTP. Independent schools can also join the programme, but will not get any financial help from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). You can find out more about the programme in this section or by contacting your nearest designated recommending body (DRB). Follow the link on the right-hand side for contact details.
