The registered teacher programme

The registered teacher programme (RTP) offers candidates who have completed two years of higher education (or equivalent) the opportunity to qualify as a teacher while working in a school.

The programme normally takes two years, and leads to qualified teacher status (QTS). RTP candidates will also get a degree. Candidates must have completed two years of higher education (or equivalent) and have a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in mathematics and English. For primary teaching, candidates also need GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in science. Trainees from outside the European Economic Area must also fulfil the Home Office’s requirements for a work permit.

RTP candidates are employed as unqualified teachers, but it is up to the school to decide whether to pay them on the unqualified or qualified scale. The TDA offers grants of up to £4,000 to cover training costs.

For more information about the RTP, contact your nearest employment based initial teacher training provider (EBITT provider). Follow the link on the right side. You can also download programme-related documents and access some FAQs.
