Holidays, benefits and pension

Teachers enjoy up to 12 weeks of holiday each year, which leaves ample time to pursue other interests or spend time with families. There are opportunities for flexible working through job-sharing or part-time work.

Teachers have the advantage of a generous occupational pension scheme with guaranteed benefits and a retirement age of 60. In areas where the high cost of housing makes it hard to recruit and retain people (eg. London, the south east and the east of England), teachers can benefit from housing support through the government’s Key Worker Living programme. The scheme offers equity loans of up to £50,000 towards buying a home (£100,000 for London teachers with leadership potential), shared ownership of new properties and favourable rents.
