There are various ways to find out more about teaching before applying for training.
The Teaching Information Line and recruitment website will provide answers to many queries. But to get a feel for what life is like as a teacher, enquirers really need to spend time in school observing lessons and talking to staff. A range of possibilities is on offer, from a one-day visit to an ‘open school’ to a 15-day paid programme for students in higher education.
It is very helpful to talk to practising teachers about their roles. This will happen naturally on a school visit, but enquirers can also contact a teaching advocate who will be pleased to answer questions about the profession.
In addition, nine regional careers advisers give impartial guidance to enquirers by phone, e-mail or face to face.
