Spend time in school

It is helpful to spend a day in a school observing lessons, talking to teachers and support staff, and seeing school life at first-hand.

Open schools

This can be arranged independently by contacting a local school. Alternatively, the Teaching Information Line will link enquirers with one of the 600 ‘open schools’ that welcome prospective teachers into their classrooms and staffrooms.

Taster courses

The three-day taster course is intended for people who are close to making a decision to apply for teacher training. It offers information about the training options available and an in-depth view of teaching, including a day in a school.

Student associates scheme

This scheme, offered at two different levels, allows students in higher education to spend up to 15 days on school-centred training. Students find out whether teaching is right for them and gain a clear idea of the standards that qualified teachers must meet. Progress during the training is carefully monitored so that those who go on to apply for teacher training can show evidence to support their application.
