Timescale and process

The Training and Development Agency for Schools' (TDA) preferred approach to enable potential new providers (PNPs) to secure accreditation is for them to follow the annual accreditation process, as laid out in the accreditation timescale.
This approach enables PNPs to benefit from access to guidance and support from the TDA while developing their proposal to provide initial teacher training (ITT).  PNPs who follow this preferred approach to accreditation and have their executive summary and outline proposal recommended by the TDA to be developed into a full proposal may be eligible for PNP funding. This funding would be to assist with costs incurred while writing the full proposal.

To determine whether a proposal will meet the secretary of state’s requirements for accreditation, the TTA has established criteria against which it will evaluate proposals at each stage of the process.  PNPs should therefore submit proposals that address each of the assessment criteria.  Failure to address the assessment criteria in full could lead to the proposal not being recommended to proceed to the next stage or, ultimately, not securing accreditation.

Once the TDA has received and evaluated a PNP’s full proposal, officers will visit the PNP to:
  • provide one to one feedback on the full proposal,
  • clarify any issues arising from the full proposal,
  • seek any necessary further information not included in the full proposal, and
  • ensure all partner school are fully involved and committed to the partnership.

The TDA’s accreditation committee reviews the full proposal and feedback from the visit to the PNP and makes a decision to the TDA board on whether the PNP should be accredited.  The board will then decide whether or not to accredit a PNP at its October meeting.

PNPs whose full proposal fails to meet the criteria for accreditation may be given the opportunity to submit a revised full proposal for consideration by the accreditation committee at its November meeting.  The TDA board will then consider the accreditation committee’s recommendation at its December meeting and make a decision whether to accredit the PNP or not.
