Golden hello - information for ITT providers

Initial teacher training providers should give eligible teachers a golden hello application form when they complete ITT. Providers should ensure that only eligible teachers receive an application form.

Teachers should retain their application form and submit it to their school once they have completed their induction year. Local authorities pay the golden hello to the teacher through payroll, and then claim the amount back from us. For more detailed information you can download the administrators’ pack available from this page.

Golden hello application form for teachers

The application form for teachers is not available on our website. To obtain copies of the golden hello application form for teachers, ITT providers should e-mail justin.ompreon@tda.gov.uk.

ITT providers should only distribute printed copies of the application form, so as to minimise the risk of fraudulent applications. Providers should complete and sign part two of the application form before giving it to eligible teachers.

Eligibility assessment

Eligibility should be assessed according to the academic year the applicant started their initial teacher training course. For full details on eligibility please check the golden hello eligibility criteria document, which is available for download from this page.

Changes to the golden hello eligibility guidance

Following the announcement by the Secretary of State, an anomaly has been removed from the golden hello eligibility criteria.

This change means that teachers trained on postgraduate courses in Northern Ireland or Scotland after 1 August 2006 who go on to teach in eligible schools in England will now be eligible to apply for the golden hello under the same terms as their English-trained counterparts.

In order to ensure that this change does not provide more favourable terms for Northern Irish and Scottish than for English-trained teachers, the requirement that a teacher needs to have had a TDA-funded bursary during their postgraduate training has been removed. This should have very limited impact as very few teachers will have funded their own postgraduate training. As a result of these changes we have updated the golden hello guidance for administrators and the associated eligibility guidance.

The golden hello administrator's pack is also available for download from the download section of this page. This provides more detailed information on the golden hello scheme and guidance on teachers’ eligibility.

Golden hello rates 2007-08

The golden hello rates in academic year 2007-08 remain the same as those in academic year 2006-07. Eligible mathematics or science teachers may apply for a £5,000 golden hello. Eligible teachers of the other priority subjects may apply for a £2,500 golden hello. As part of this, a key rule is that only those teachers who receive a £9,000 training bursary will be eligible for a golden hello.

Funding arrangements from 1 August 2008

For trainees starting secondary postgraduate English, dance and drama ITT courses after 1 August 2008, the bursary will be reduced from £9,000 to £6,000. Trainees on these courses will not be eligible to receive a golden hello.
