Proposed changes to the funding of supplementary subject knowledge training for postgraduate ITT trainees

We are planning to start phasing in new funding arrangements for supplementary subject knowledge training courses delivered by initial teacher training (ITT) providers.

These new arrangements will replace the existing separate funding arrangements for the design and delivery of subject knowledge booster courses, subject knowledge enhancement and extension courses, and extended postgraduate ITT courses.

The arrangements are intended to be simpler to administer and more coherent for providers, whilst increasing the overall number of trainees receiving additional subject knowledge training.

Partners were invited to give feedback on these proposals in January; you can download a summary of the feedback from the links to the right.

In the main the feedback was positive and most people agreed that the new proposals met their intended aims. There were also some constructive suggestions as to how the proposed new funding arrangements could be improved.

Timescales

We have been working on refining the proposals in light of the feedback and will announce the new funding mechanism by the end of May 2008. At this point we will invite ITT providers to bid for an allocation of subject knowledge development places for the next three academic years (08/09, 09/10 and 10/11). The deadline for bids is likely to be the end of June 2008 and we intend to issue allocations by the end of July 2008.
