An NQT may want to complete their induction on a part-time basis. The induction calculator helps to work out how long this will take.
If an NQT works part-time, the length of their induction is calculated pro rata. For example, working on a 0.5 contract, induction lasts six terms instead of the standard three. An NQT may be working in two schools simultaneously across a term or more.
The calculator shows how much induction is left to complete and how long this will take on any contract rate. It will also calculate when an NQT's formal assessments are due.
Instructions
Section one
In this section, enter details of any terms of induction the newly qualified teacher (NQT) has already undertaken. If they have not yet started their induction, leave this section blank.
Include any teaching post (including supply) that lasted at least one term and included an induction support programme. Use a different entry each time the NQT changed school or contract rate. Do not include any teaching post:
- that lasted for less than one term
- was completed outside England or Wales
- where the NQT was not provided with an induction programme.
Section two
Enter details of how the NQT would like to undertake their remaining induction. The calculator will work out how long this will take on their choice of contract rate and the school term structure.Section three
Enter the number of formal assessment forms the NQT has completed so far. These are the assessments they have at the end of each full term, to ascertain their progress towards meeting the core standards. The calculator will work out when these assessments are due according to the NQT's choice of contract rate and school term structure.Glossary
Number of terms worked: enter the number of terms the NQT has worked during each teaching post they have held so far. You can include decimals (eg 1.5 for one and a half terms) but don't include any employment that lasted less than one term. Only include terms of induction that the NQT has completed, not their current one.
How many terms per school year: some schools work on three, four, five or six-term years. Enter the number of terms per year that the NQT's previous schools operated.
Contract type: the contract rate should be specified on the NQT's employment contract. If not, use the following table as a guide.
| Number of days worked per week | Contract rate |
|---|---|
| 5 | 1 |
| 4.5 | 0.9 |
| 4 | 0.8 |
| 3.5 | 0.7 |
| 3 | 0.6 |
| 2.5 | 0.5 |
| 2 | 0.4 |
| 1.5 | 0.3 |
| 1 | 0.2 |
| 0.5 | 0.1 |
Number of full-time terms remaining: this shows how many terms of induction an NQT would have left to complete, if they were working full-time in a three-term per year school. Complete section two to find out how long this will take on the NQT's choice of contract.
On what contract rate does the NQT want to complete their remaining induction: please enter the contract rate the NQT would like to work on. You can use the following table as a guide.
| Number of days worked per week | Contract rate |
|---|---|
| 5 | 1 |
| 4.5 | 0.9 |
| 4 | 0.8 |
| 3.5 | 0.7 |
| 3 | 0.6 |
| 2.5 | 0.5 |
| 2 | 0.4 |
| 1.5 | 0.3 |
| 1 | 0.2 |
| 0.5 | 0.1 |
On this contract rate the induction period will be: this shows how long induction will take to complete on this contract rate. It is calculated from the beginning of the NQT's current post, not from today. The timings given are intended as a guide only.
How many formal assessments has the NQT completed so far: towards the end of each full term of the induction period, the NQT should meet their induction tutor and/or headteacher/principal for a formal assessment. When the NQT works part-time these meetings will be spaced out pro rata. The timings given are calculated from the beginning of the current post, not from today and are intended as a guide.
