Key words and meanings

The career entry and development profile (CEDP) is designed to help trainee and newly qualified teachers think about their development at three transition points.

Transition point one is towards the end of ITT, transition point two is at the start of induction, and transition point three is at the end of induction.

Newly qualified teacher (NQT)
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
Initial teacher training (ITT)

Role Responsibilities CEDP and transition points
Trainee teachers Once you have gained QTS, your next phase of learning begins with induction You will be actively engaged with your tutors and mentors at transition point one
NQTs You need to play an active role in all aspects of your induction programme You will plan your induction with your induction tutor, and discuss priorities, progress and aspirations at transition points two and three
ITT tutors You will familiarise your trainees with the induction arrangements, and introduce them to the CEDP You will support your trainees in recording responses at transition point one. You need to sign to confirm individual discussion with each trainee at transition point one
Induction tutors You will have day-to-day responsibility for the monitoring, support and assessment of the NQT You will work with your NQTs on transition points two and three, and can refer back to their responses at transition point one
Headteachers You need to ensure that each NQT has an appropriate induction programme and, later, make a recommendation to the local authority about whether the NQT has met the induction standards
Local authorities  You need to be sure that your schools monitor and assess the NQT and decide, in the light of the headteacher’s recommendation, whether an NQT has satisfactorily completed induction. You then need to communicate this decision to those involved
Overseas trained teachers You can choose to be assessed against the induction standards at the same time as QTS standards. If you choose not to, or do not meet these standards, you will undertake induction like any other NQT Please refer to information for NQTs as applicable
