Collaborative technologies in languages initiative (CTLI)

The collaborative technologies in languages initiative (CTLI) project is an international project in which six primary schools, three initial teaching training (ITT) institutions and local authorities and regional governments in England, France and Spain are working together using a shared curriculum to develop and improve the teaching and learning of languages.

The project aims to ensure that the integration of foreign languages does not create a burden on the existing curriculum, but enriches existing work in all three countries. The use of technology creates a resource base for teachers, trainees and pupils, and real communication gives meaning to language learning.

The collaborative technologies in languages initiative is jointly funded by the TDA and Microsoft. The schools, universities and local authorities involved are:

  • King’s Road Primary School, Trafford
  • Seymour Park Primary School, Trafford
  • CEIP San Miguel, Granada
  • Cristo de la Yedra, Granada
  • École élémentaire de Frontenay Rohan Rohan, Poitiers
  • École élémentaire de Magné, Poitiers
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Universidad de Granada
  • IUFM Poitou-Charentes
  • Trafford local authority
  • Junta de Andalucía
  • Académie Niort
  • Académie Poitiers - Rectorat
  • Maire de Magné
  • Maire de Frontenay Rohan Rohan

Technology for communication

Using innovative technologies, including a secure, web-based virtual learning platform, interactive whiteboards, laptops, digital cameras and some videoconferencing, the schools and teacher training institutions are developing new pedagogies for the teaching and learning of primary languages.

The Gateway

The Gateway virtual learning platform is a "virtual school" currently being trialed by the schools involved, working collaboratively on a shared curriculum. Developed by the TDA and Microsoft in conjunction with partner LP+, the Gateway creates an interactive experience for children, teachers and the wider school communities in the three countries, and enables them to communicate, collaborate on work, and share information and resources.
