Recruiting minorities

Investing in diversity – improving the recruitment and retention of black and minority ethnic trainee teachers.

We live in a diverse society. The challenge for the TDA and initial teacher training (ITT) providers is to build a teaching profession that reflects society's wide range of ethnic and social groups.

ITT providers need to train a teaching profession that makes use of the widest pool of talent and experience available. On these pages you'll find details on the support we offer to ITT providers and stakeholders in recruiting and retaining high-quality trainees with a black and minority ethnic (BME) background.

For the 2007/09 academic years we have two new schemes to support providers in improving the recruitment and retention of BME teachers. We communicated details of both schemes, along with BME targets and funding, to providers in September 2007. Both schemes are available to HEI, SCITT and EBITT providers.
