Personal tutoring

From September 2010, all secondary school students will receive personalised support from a named personal tutor that knows them well, has an overview of their progress, ensures any learning needs or issues are addressed quickly, and acts as a point of contact for parents.

The expectation is that personal tutoring will help to:

  • improve attainment via a universal, systematic and personalised approach
  • fulfil the five Every Child Matters outcomes by focusing on each pupil’s individual circumstances
  • support early intervention, referral and prompt access to appropriate, specialist services
  • encourage the involvement of key stakeholders including students, staff and parents, and
  • support collaborative working, including with other schools and in multi-agency partnerships

Schools that have already established personal tutoring systems will not be obliged to set up new ones and should see this as an opportunity to review and build on existing practice rather than as a requirement to implement completely new practice.
