Extended services: a toolkit for school governors

This toolkit is designed to help governors support their schools in developing effective extended services.

School governors have an important role to play in planning, developing and implementing extended services that reflect the needs of pupils and the wider community, and have a real impact on standards and achievement.

Drawing extensively on the tools and principles of workforce remodelling, this toolkit is designed to help governors support their schools in developing effective extended services that reflect the needs of pupils and the wider community and make a real impact on standards, achievement and well-being. This toolkit is aimed at school governors and local authority staff involved in training governors.

The kit includes:

  • a description of the ‘core offer’ of extended services, the benefits and how they fit with other policies
  • an overview of governors’ roles and responsibilities with regard to extended services
  • a diagnostic for measuring readiness to deliver extended services and identifying services already being delivered
  • six practical tools designed to help bridge gaps and maximise service effectiveness, and
  • further sources of information.

Use the links on the right-hand side to download the full toolkit or a summary leaflet containing a brief overview of extended services and the roles and responsibilities of governors.
