The targeted youth support (TYS) toolkit explains how to work with this tool in the context of a multi-agency workshop. See the
Every Child Matters website for more information.
What is it?
- Journey mapping is a practical and powerful tool to help agencies and organisations deepen their understanding of the strengths and weaknesses in their service provision for vulnerable young people. It examines the journey through support services that vulnerable young people and their families experience. Journey mapping enables agencies and organisations to:
- better understand how young people and their families experience their journey through support services. Real cases could be used – focusing discussion on the young people with whom practitioners are working
- better understand their strengths and weaknesses and how they can become even more effective in supporting young people and their families, particularly through increased collaboration
- work together to identify gaps in provision, duplication and where support is working well and not so well – this analysis can form the basis of service reform or redesign
- better understand their role and that of other agencies in supporting vulnerable young people and families
- stress-test local implementation challenges around processes such as the lead professional, the common assessment framework and information sharing for vulnerable young people and their families
- begin to consider how to improve their support through a more integrated approach and work more effectively with their most challenging and resource-intensive cases. It also enables agencies and organisations to think about the way they use their funds.
When would you use it?
- Journey mapping primarily is for the context of a multi-agency workshop – see the workshop guide in the Discover stage of the online TYS change management toolkit. It brings agencies and organisations together to map out service provision and identify strengths and weaknesses, eg. gaps, duplication and where support is working well and not so well. This helps agencies and organisations see the whole picture and how vulnerable young people and their families are supported.
