Cover diagnostic tool

The diagnostic tool that you can download here allows your school to audit its current cover provision. The tool will help you to assess your priorities for change and enable you to identify the most appropriate future strategies.

The audit process has seven steps:

  1. Assessing the hours of cover provided by teaching staff..
  2. Examining the reasons why cover was required.
  3. Determining which cover strategies were used for different types of absence.
  4. Breaking down the unit cost for each cover strategy.
  5. Summarising the benefits and concerns for strategies currently deployed.
  6. Projecting the cost of proposed new strategies.
  7. Summarising the benefits and concerns for proposed new strategies.

The tool is available in two formats:

  • The Excel spreadsheet will dynamically calculate hourly totals and other information for you
  • The PDF file provides a printable version of the spreadsheet if you prefer to work on paper without a computer
