WAMG, working with our team, has produced a PPA toolkit which enables schools to assess their PPA need, audit existing non-contact time and assists in assessing, comparing and costing the PPA strategies under consideration.
The use of this tool, as part of the process of selecting PPA strategies, allows schools to compare strategies which involve maximising existing teaching.
Obtaining the tool
The tool is available in two formats:
- The Excel spreadsheet will dynamically calculate hourly totals and other information for you (schools with a 30-plus teaching staff are advised to use the electronic toolkit on a departmental basis). Instructions on the use of the Excel version of the toolkit can be downloaded here.
- This PDF file provides a printable version of the spreadsheet if you prefer to work on paper without a computer. Instructions on the use of the paper version of the toolkit can be downloaded here.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties using the CD-rom version of the toolkit, please click here.
The PPA toolkit has been devised to assist schools in assessing their PPA need and evaluating key aspects of proposed PPA strategies. It is essential that schools understand the legal requirements, and the intended benefits to standards and teachers' work/life balance, of the contractual change on PPA. Key documents which provide guidance on PPA, and strategies to deliver guaranteed PPA time, include:
Statutory guidance section 4 of the School teachers' pay and conditions document (PDF format, 151KB)
Guidance accompanying the section 133 regulations issued under the Education Act 2002 (PDF format, 133KB)
WAMG guidance note on higher level teaching assistant roles for school support staff (PDF format, 400KB)
WAMG guidance note 1 (PDF format, 80KB)
WAMG guidance note 7 (PDF format, 745 KB)
