The Government is committed to recruiting, training and supporting HLTAs who specialise in secondary mathematics or science. To support this, the TDA has built capacity to enable every secondary school to recruit an HLTA specialising in either of these subjects.
In the 2005/06 academic year, we carried out a pilot project that explored the most effective ways of recruiting, training, employing and deploying mathematics and science HLTAs. We have produced a research summary of the results of the pilot (PDF, 446KB). Following the pilot, we aligned the mathematics and science specialisms with the existing HLTA programme.
Trainees are expected to work towards achieving HLTA status whilst simultaneously completing a year of academic study comprising subject knowledge and subject pedagogy (both theory and practice).
Your regional provider of assessment (RPA) or local authority (LA) will have details of training in your area. Find your LA and RPA contact details.
