All candidates for higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status need funding to complete the preparation and assessment parts of the programme. In addition, they may need funding for training. This will depend on whether they need to undertake training to meet gaps in knowledge, skills or experience prior to assessment.
The local authority (LA) may be able to fund the training, preparation and assessment parts of the HLTA programme for candidates in the following types of school:
- academy
- city technology college
- community
- community special
- foundation
- foundation special
- pupil referral unit
- voluntarily aided
- voluntarily controlled
If the LA will not fund a candidate, all parts of the programme can be self-funded or funded by the school or institution that is supporting the candidate's assessment.
Other school settings include the independent sector, playing for success centres, and non-maintained nursery school settings. Schools in these settings can choose to fund a candidate's training, preparation and assessment, or candidates can fund themselves.
The candidate or school can contact the regional provider of assessment (RPA) for further information on training and preparation opportunities available in the region.
