National occupational standards for supporting teaching and learning in schools

We developed the national occupational standards for supporting teaching and learning in schools (NOS STL) with partners in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland in June 2007. Consultation was carried out across the UK, to ensure the standards reflect the occupational roles of all learning support staff. Employers and practitioners were closely involved in the development process to ensure the standards are practical and relate to how schools operate. Although the NOS STL apply across the UK, guidance on these web pages only applies to England.

The TDA worked with school leaders to develop the NOS STL. The standards describe what support staff need to do, know and understand in their roles. They support and enhance the day-to-day activities of school leaders and support staff, and align with national expectations and qualifications.

The National Occupational Standards (NOS) brochure (PDF, 2MB) provides further information on how the NOS were developed and how they can be used.

STL NOS Links with QCF Units (PDF, 94KB) shows how the NOS STL link with the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) unit(s) drawn from them.
